9th Grade Classical Mythology

Classical Mythology I: This course serves as a foundation to introduce freshmen to the core values and practices of Maspeth High School through the examination of classical literature. Through such works as D’aulaire’s Book of Greek Myths, The Voyage of Argo, and The Iliad, students will learn to think metacognitively and critically, while cultivating an open mindset for all tasks, including Socratic Seminars and debates and declamations.


Classical Mythology II: In this course students will continue their study of ancient works. In the second term, student focus will include: Sophocles' Antigone, The Epic of Gilgamesh, and Seamus Heaney's masterful translation of Beowulf.

 

Summer assignment for Incoming 9th graders:

In at least 250 words, explain what the following quote means to you and whether you agree or disagree with it.  The essay should consist of at least 3 paragraphs: an introduction, body and conclusion.  Please write in complete sentences.  You may type or handwrite the essay.  Either way, it must be double-spaced and the font cannot be bigger than 12, if typed.
