American Literature I: President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, "Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists." This is the American condition, and one that creates a fascinating amalgamation of fiction and nonfiction. In this course we will explore what it means to be American by delving into foundational documents by the nation's early revolutionaries and later civil rights activists, thus paralleling the U.S. history course. We will specifically focus on how writers create effective arguments with the intention of completing a research project to close the semester. We will also read seminal texts.

AP Language and Composition I: The AP English Language and Composition course focuses on the conventions, practices, and processes of college-level academic discourse. Students are expected to engage with various rhetorical modes to become not only skilled writers but skilled readers of the written text. Students will learn to identify the rhetorical situation, examining the authors’ purposes, audiences, subjects, and contexts and develop the skills to write across the curriculum. Ultimately, the course concludes with a challenging exam that assesses students' ability to aptly analyze and read closely a variety of selections in the multiple-choice section of the exam. The second skill measured by the exam is the ability to compose claim-based arguments through appropriate reasoning and evidence. All three free-response essays require a claim and the use of reasoned thought and evidence in support of that claim. The first semester of the course will explore primary documents from the nation's early revolutionaries and later civil rights activists in order to develop a keen sense of rhetorical strategies. Students will write several essays exhibiting their skill in this subject.

American Literature II: The second semester of American Literature will see students reading more literary texts that exhibit the unique American culture. Students will also read several short stories that demonstrate the diverse American culture. Throughout each unit, students will complete analysis of several American ideas and characters while completing creative projects.

AP Language and Composition II: During the second semester of AP Language and Composition, students will delve deeper into literature and complete college-level discussions and assignments concerning this material. Students will also read short stories that reflect American culture.
