Celebrating our Student-Athletes

Dear Families and Colleagues,

This fall, nearly 25,000 high school students competed in fall sports through our Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL). That’s an impressive number, and it’s even more meaningful when you consider the experiences of every one of those student-athletes. Whether they won or lost, our students grew in their determination, their self-confidence, and their collaboration skills. They developed as teammates and leaders across a range of sports, from soccer to badminton, swimming to volleyball.

I want to congratulate our student-athletes and thank the many adults who made their successes possible, including our coaches, athletic directors, school staff, and families. Next week, our PSAL team will bring together over 270 athletic directors from across the city, so they can take steps toward enhancing the student-athlete experience even further.

And while it’s technically still autumn, our winter sports season has already begun, with offerings that include basketball, indoor track, wrestling, and gymnastics. To join a team, interested high school students should reach out to the athletic director at their school. And for additional highlights and championship updates as we wrap up the fall season, visit our PSAL website and follow PSAL on social media.

Our athletic programs are a shining example of one of my core beliefs as an educator: learning and growth happen anywhere we provide the opportunity—whether in the classroom or on the court.

In partnership,

Melissa Aviles-Ramos

Chancellor

The Chancellor’s Spotlight:

This past Monday, students participated in our fall tennis championships, showcasing both their athletic skills and the power of strong, supportive PSAL communities. As a student from the High School for Environmental Studies, one of the winning teams, shared, she’s looking forward to “being a really good role model” when she’s a senior on the team next year.
