Maspeth High School, the classical school of New York City, was founded by Principal Khurshid Abdul-Mutakabbir in 2011. Situated in the borough of Queens, Maspeth is an open-enrollment public school that serves a diverse population of learners and provides the opportunity for students to engage with their peers through the school's robust after-school offerings, inclusive of nearly forty different clubs and twenty-seven sports teams. Our classical education model is a language-intensive, inquiry-centered approach to education that has existed for thousands of years and has produced great minds such as Socrates, Copernicus, Galileo, Shakespeare, Goethe, Newton, and Einstein. Combining high expectations with a supportive environment, Maspeth provides students with access to a full-time college counselor as well as academic advisers, and a full-time mental health clinic to ensure that their social-emotional needs are fulfilled while assisting them in recognizing their potential throughout their four-year citizenship within the school community.
With a focus on building skills such as reading comprehension, expository writing, public speaking, problem-solving, and computation, our teachers have developed an accessible and rigorous curriculum for students of all ability levels. We engage our students through Socratic seminars, debates, declamations, productive struggle, action research and introspection-based activities across all disciplines, inspiring them to question all aspects of their world, and fostering the pursuit of truth, beauty, and goodness.
