Argo Day - Everything You Need To Know

Hello Maspeth High School!

I’m Mr. Singh, and I’d like wanted to take a few minutes to tell everyone the official plan for Argo Day and answer some frequently asked questions that the Restorative Justice Team has been receiving since we announced the event.

So What is Argo Day?  And Why are we doing this?
Argo Day is Maspeth High School’s multicultural celebration. One of the beautiful things about our community is the great diversity that we all bring to our school. We want to celebrate the rich cultures and backgrounds that makes up our community.

When is it happening?
Argo day is this Thursday May 25th! It will begin during 7th period. Seniors, we know this is your lunch period, and want to be sure that any of you that want to eat, have the opportunity to do so.

After 6th period, we advise everyone to get their belongings from their lockers, and go to your 7th period class. - You will not be able to go back upstairs once the event starts. Please also keep in mind that you will be carrying your things with you throughout the rest of the day, so pack light on this day.

About 10 minutes into 7th period an announcement will be made to instruct all students and staff to go to their designated continent locations.

If you’re wondering, where you go:
Any students or staff who identify most with a country located in Asia or Australia please go to the Auditorium after the announcement is made.
Anyone who identifies most with a country in Europe or Africa will go to the cafeteria
Anyone who identifies most with a country in North America, South America or the Caribbean will go to the gym.

What are we doing in our continent locations?
We are preparing for the flag parade around the block of our school. 
There will be a designated point person at every location with a bag of flags from that continent.
If you don’t have your own gear from your country please see that person to get a flag.
The school only has one large flag from every country, so we are really hoping that most of you will come dressed in your own gear and flags.

We’ve had a lot of questions about speakers and music, can we bring our own speakers?
We have made a playlist based on your song recommendations for each continent and 1 person will be designated to play the music for that location.
We don’t want multiple people trying to play different songs at the same time, because no one will be able to hear the music clearly.
So students do not need to bring their own speaker.

Once each group is organized with music and flags, we will announce the start of the flag parade. Each group will evacuate their designated area when instructed to do so and we will walk on the sidewalk towards 57th ave, around school of heroes, down grand ave towards 74th street, and back into our school building. AT NO POINT WILL WE BE CROSSING A STREET AND AT NO POINT SHOULD ANYONE WALK ONTO THE STREET!

NYPD will be on hand to ensure that the parade route is safe.

Once you get back in the building, everyone will grab a seat on the field around the performance stage.

We will have a quick reminder of the other activities planned for the day and instructions. Don’t worry this will only take about 5 minutes.

So what are the other activities?
Food! 
Surrounding the field will be tables of food that have been donated by local restaurants, families from our school community, and our staff. Participants will be able to walk around and sample bite sized food from different cultures. We apologize in advance as we know that every student will not get to try everything, but everyone will be able to try something.
If you are bringing food for the event, when you come in in the morning, a staff member will direct you on where to put your food.
Please also remember that you need to bring a list of ingredients that will be placed next to your food so that people with allergies will know what your food contains.
DISCLAIMER: Local restaurants that have donated food will not be providing a list of ingredients so, if you have any food restrictions or allergies, please be aware and do not eat something unless you know exactly what is in it and that it is safe for you to eat.
Performances!
Performances will take place on the backfield and will be announced as they are about to take place. Any participant may feel free to sit and watch the performances as they take place.

Painting!
Any student who would like to participate in a paint afternoon activity may go to the cafeteria where you can paint freely or be lead through a demonstration by the art club and Ms. McGlone. Thanks Ms. McGlone for coordinating this+!

Any student who would like to participate in Mini games or more physical activities may head down to the gymnasium. Thank you to our PE teachers for planning and hosting this space.

Do I have to stay in 1 location the whole time?
No! You can move through each of the 3 designated locations at your own pace. However, you must be in one of these 3 locations throughout the event.

What time is it over?
The event ends at 3:30; however, if you need to leave at the end of the school day, feel free to do so at 2:20.
