Hello and welcome to Maspeth High School. This is Mr. Pachter along with Mr. Singh.  We are the two assistant principals at Maspeth High School and we are here to present the annual PowerPoint presentation to the incoming freshman class. We like to start every year with this word which is SALVE it is Latin for hello and we like to display this and highlight the fact that Maspeth High School offers one foreign language course for students to take during their time here and that foreign language is Latin. These are some of the awards that the school has won in years past We are an ECO school. We have been recognized by the Office of Sustainability as a Gold S.E.E.D. Certified School and we've also been recognized by the Bethpage Federal Credit Union as Best In The Boro for Maspeth High School being one of High School Spirit and one of the Best Public Schools in the New York City Department of Education. So this is our vision which is to prepare our students to become leaders in all fields of personal endeavors through academia and to be physically, emotionally, and intellectually healthy with determination and compassion. Our mission is that we implement a classical Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum which is heavily focused on college preparatory classes that will train our students to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners with strong character. That brings us to our Three Core Values which are Beauty, Truth and Goodness Below are a list of colleges and universities located within the United States and across the globe the graduates of Maspeth High School have attended in years pas.  As you can see, students have been offered full rides, been recruited for wrestling and basketball, and I've been accepted into pre-pharmacy and pre-law programs. Now we'd like to go over the curriculum for our incoming 9th grade class. Students at Maspeth High School, in 9th grade, will take the courses listed here. Our English class is called Classical Mythology. For history students will start with Global History 1 or AP World History. In math students will either take Common Core Algebra or Common Core Geometry.  In science, students will start with living environment or AP environmental science.  As mentioned before the foreign language at our school is Latin. So students will start with Latin 1 and students will take physical education and health for all four years of high school. Finally, students will be asked to select one of these five art disciplines. Either Visual Arts, Classical Ballet String Orchestra, Theater or Choir to participate in and we ask if they follow that through for 4 years. Below is a link to a video prepared by our arts department to learn a little bit more about the five art disciplines. At our school we offer our students the opportunity to get and arts endorsement which is why we asked them to pick one of the five art disciplines so they may progress through high school and earn and arts endorsement. In order to do that students need to complete 9 to 10 credits in one art form and pass the corresponding Arts assessment. We also offer a variety of Honor level, college level and advanced placement courses at Maspeth High School. are we have a college-level trigonometry course that most students may take in 11th grade sponsored by St. John's University where they can earn 3 college credits at a discounted price of tuition. We also offer numerous Advanced Placement courses which are sponsored by College Board which will allow students of Maspeth High School to potentially graduate high school with over 30 college credits as documented in this slide. At Maspeth High School we have a strong emphasis on public speaking. In your history classes that will be shown in the form of debates. In English, students will participate in Socratic Seminar which will also highlight our emphasis on public speaking. Students at Maspeth High School also participate in an annual open declamation competition in front of the entire school.  Highlighted in these photos are seven brave student that have done this in years past. We also have many sports, clubs and publications that take place at Maspeth High School. As the school's Athletic Director I'm proud to highlight the 27 PSAL sport teams that we have to offer our student body. The sports range from Varsity Coed Cricket to Varsity Girls Lacrosse to Varsity Boys Basketball.  We encourage our students to become student-athletes throughout their four years at Maspeth high School. These are some of the service clubs that we offer at Maspeth High School to highlight just a few of them we have Key Club, 4-H Club, Green Club which has one multiple awards as we talked about. Our HOSA Club and Best Buddies.  We also participate in many competitive teams that travel across the state and the country to participate in different activities. We have a Fencing Club, a Chess Team, mock trial, cheerleading, robotics floor hockey, Mathletes. In addition to the clubs mentioned before, we have many academic clubs for our students to participate in ranging from Band club to Unity Club to Junior States of America.  As mentioned we encourage our student population to participate in clubs every day after school. These are several of the honor societies that our school has to offer.  National Arts Honor Society, National Honor Society.  We have a History, Science and English Honor Society as well as a Tri-M Music Honor Society Our Our publications and clubs include, but are not limited, to our school newspaper, our school literary magazine, and our student developed Yearbook. For our instructional Support Services we provide individualized instruction to meet the needs of all of our Learners including, but not limited to, students with IEPs, as well as English language learners. Their email address are listed on this slide. A typical bell schedule for Maspeth High School, pre-COVID, starts at 8:15 a.m. and the day ends at 2:35 p.m. for instructional purposes. Now as we have stated before we encourage all students to stay after school past 2:35, to join an extracurricular activity whether it be a club or a sports team or potentially attend office hours posted daily by your teachers for tutoring purposes. This is a copy of our school's dress code as it was prior to the pandemic. This year we've suspended our school's dress code but fully look forward to implementing the dress code once School resumes to full in-person learning. Currently, the majority of our students are engaged in remote learning. Our model has four in-person cohorts and one fully remote group. Students in the blended model, which means that they attend in person learning one day a week, and have four days of fully remote instruction on the other days of the week.  Mondays are an asynchronous day for all students which allow for in-person tutoring, clubs and activities, to take place.  Students receive live instruction Tuesday through Friday regardless if they are Blended or fully remote students. Again this is subject to change for next school year depending on the state of our country.
